Senior Associate with Litigation Experience

Our commercial contracts litigation and business law firm is seeking a Senior Associate to take ownership of a robust caseload, including frequent contact with clients, supervising the work of the legal team, and ensuring cases progress through the firm’s pipeline while maintaining the highest quality standards. We are located in Rockville, Maryland, and we serve clients in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

We are a boutique firm poised for serious growth, and we need an attorney with trial experience to join our team who understands business law and contracts, needs little oversight in how to handle cases, and produces high-quality work product.

Our firm values an entrepreneurial spirit. We welcome the ability of any attorney who can develop his or her own caseload, even bringing along any current clients or matters.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a minimum of five years of litigation experience and three or more years’ experience in contract law with the ability to handle complex cases from start to finish, including motion practice, depositions, alternative dispute resolution and trial. Ability to interact with clients is required.

If this sounds like a position for you, please read the following carefully: APPLY BY EMAIL at the address given at the end of the posting. Only applicants who follow instructions will be contacted. Applications received through any posting service will not be reviewed.

To be successful, you must be confident; flexible; growth-minded; responsive; comfortable working with a legal team and delegating work to paralegals and assistants; and a thorough and precise researcher, writer, and speaker.

Your primary duties will be to:

    1. Assume full responsibility for the legal production pipeline and delivery of work to the client; and
    2. Ensure all legal work is completed efficiently, accurately, and on-time.

We need an experienced attorney who can work independently. There are many opportunities to seek help, brainstorm, bounce ideas off each other – but we do not have bandwidth to train basic and fundamental concepts in litigation and business, employment, or IP law. We think the right candidate will have five to ten years of experience with a top-tier practice.

You must be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and legal acumen performing the type of work below:

  • Contract drafting and negotiation
  • Business law – especially setting up new corporate entities, employment/labor/vendor contracts, employee policies, corporate compliance, and associated matters
  • Deposition, discovery and motion practice

We need high-energy and enthusiasm for the work we do (and life in general). You must be able to work fast and switch gears quickly. You must be able to think on your feet and make smart decisions.

You should be able to evaluate a matter or situation and act accordingly. If you have to ask questions about what to do next, you should bring your recommended solution – not open-ended requests. You should be able to answer questions and give direction to the paralegals and assistants and explain what they need to do (and why) to complete their assignments.

You also need to be detail-oriented. We help a lot of people to resolve their legal disputes, as well as a range of other legal matters, so that they can focus on their businesses. We produce significant amounts of work on sometimes tight schedules. Working fast is no excuse for careless mistakes. No one’s life or business should be negatively impacted because our firm didn’t file the right documents, do the right searches, or meet deadlines. It can’t happen.

You must have emotional intelligence and empathy. You must take criticism gracefully and deal well with people. You must be a team player. You will be supervising a dynamic group of people that make up our legal team. Our team is growing, and you will be instrumental in that growth. We are strong believers in the team approach and our office is a team environment, so if you are not a team player, this is not the job for you.

You need to be able to talk to people in a manner that is kind and candid. You may need to deliver difficult messages with compassion and without talking down, barking, or snapping. You must be able and willing to confront issues early and head-on to help the team grow and thrive. We don’t sugarcoat the truth.

You should not be a person who gets angry quickly or blows their stack if someone says something you don’t like.

If you think your juris doctorate and years of work experience mean that you are too good or valuable or important to make coffee, stuff envelopes, or scan your own documents, this is absolutely, positively not the job for you.

To put it simply, we want you to do good work and lead our team to rally around our clients to help solve their legal problems. We want people who want to fight for our clients.

If you realize that the work environment we have created will help you get your job done efficiently, with other people who love their job, while helping people who really need it, and allowing you to earn a competitive compensation package at a firm that also respects your life outside of work, then you are the type of candidate we would like to meet.

If you are hired, you will be part of a wonderful team of people who work hard to get the job done right the first time and take pride in the work that they do. You will be part of a team that is rewarded for their hard work.

With regard to compensation, it is negotiable based upon experience and is subject to review after 180 days. The compensation package plan will give you some control over what you can earn working for our firm. If we succeed, you will too.

Is this going to be an easy job? No. It might be one of the biggest challenges of your life. But it is our belief that anything really great is worth working for, and that our greatest growth comes from our biggest challenges. You will be challenged. You will have fun. You will be compensated.

If you have gotten this far and are thinking about applying, it means that you are ready for a challenge and want to be part of a team that helps people and rewards good work.
